Large Glazing Replacement at Black Country Living Museum

Project Overview

GlassPlus was contacted by Black Country Living Museum following the failure of a large double-glazed unit at its visitor centre. After completing an initial site survey, our team developed a complete replacement solution that matched the existing glass specification and maintained the building’s appearance and performance.

Due to the museum’s popularity and unique historic setting, the work required careful planning around visitor activity and restrictions on vehicle movements. GlassPlus managed the project from the initial survey through to the final installation, completing the replacement safely and with minimal disruption to the visitor experience.

Large double-glazed replacement unit being handled with specialist lifting equipment at Black Country Living Museum

THE BRIEF

The Challenge

The objective was to replace the failed double-glazed unit with a like-for-like solution that matched the original glass specification while restoring the safety, appearance and functionality of the visitor centre.

The museum’s popularity and historic setting created additional logistical challenges. Vehicle movements were restricted during visiting hours, so the lifting equipment, specialist labour and installation programme all needed to be carefully coordinated to minimise disruption to museum operations and preserve the visitor experience.

OUR APPROACH

The GlassPlus Solution

GlassPlus provided a complete turnkey service, managing every stage of the replacement process from the initial survey through to final installation. This included sourcing the large double-glazed replacement panels, coordinating specialist labour, arranging the required lifting equipment and overseeing the project’s logistics.

Working closely with the museum team, we developed an installation programme that accommodated the site restrictions and limited vehicle movements during visiting hours. Careful coordination allowed the glazing replacement to be completed safely and efficiently while minimising disruption to visitors and normal museum operations.

THE OUTCOME

Project Results

The failed glazing was successfully replaced with a like-for-like double-glazed solution that restored the visitor centre’s appearance, safety and performance while remaining consistent with the existing building.

Through detailed planning and close coordination with the museum team, GlassPlus completed the replacement safely and efficiently without detracting from the historic setting or significantly disrupting the visitor experience.
